An Explication of Emily Dickinsons Loaded Gun Emily Dickinsons poem My Life had stood-a Loaded Gun- is a powerful statement of the speakers choice to forego the accepted roles of her time and embrace a taboo existence, a life open only to men. The speaker does so wholeheartedly and without reservation, with any and all necessary force, exulting in her decision. She speaks with great power and passion, tolerating no interference, and wills herself to maintain this choice for her entire life. The structure of the poem is a common one for Dickinson, alternating iambic tetrameter and trimeter. These six quatrains are evocative of the verses from the Protestant religious services that Dickinson attended as a child butâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Now the speaker resumes alternation between images suggestive of gender: masculine- hunt (6), Mountains (8), Vesuvian (11), Day (13),-and feminine- woods (5), the Doe (6), Valley (10), Night (13), the Eider-Ducks / Deep Pillow (15-16). There is a further mingling of gender images in the first stanza: the masculine gun as a passive (i.e., feminine) instrument, standing in a corner, awaiting the masculine empowerment. Likewise, the cordial light / Upon the Valley glow (9-10), constitutes a soft, feminine image, until the next line reveals the glow is from a volcanic eruption-an extremely masculine image. This mixture and blurring of sexual cues reflects the message of the poem, the speakers adoption of a role crossing gend er lines. While there is very little rhyming in this poem, one rhyme stands out: Doe (6), and foe (17). Again we see the pairing of masculine and feminine images. And both are faced with death from the speaker. They also rhyme with the cross-gendered use of glow (10) mentioned above. The effect is to accentuate the blending and confusion of gender roles built by the poem. In the fourth stanza the speaker continues to affirm herself as outside the normal bounds of gender roles, including that role most taken for granted of Victorian women, that of wife. Food is a major part of the story, and it is somewhat obvious as the title itself is about food. The novel carries many of the culinary traditions that Mexicans find very important in their culture. Mexican women play a big role in domestic life and must know how to prepare food. The ability of Mexican women to create dishes for every occasion is one that has become a great tradition in Mexico. This is a romance tragedy novel that takes place in Mexico during the Revolution. It is a tale of true love, family traditions and family secrets. This book is very unique and unlike other books because the book is divided into twelve sections named after the months of the year. Each chapter begins with a new recipe, and these recipes are used to tell Titaââ¬â¢s life story. Tita has many negative traditions that she has to struggle against.By family tradition, Tita, as the youngest daughter, is fated to care for her mother till her mothers death. She cannot marry, cannot have children, and yet she falls in love with Pedro. She is the youngest daughter and she has the most responsibilty of the three sisters. She is not allowed to make her own decisions, therefore her mom makes every decision for her. The last and most harshest thing she has to struggle against is not being able to choose whom to marry. That can put a person down, and make them feel as if they have hit rock bottom. Love is the only thing that makes people happy, no matter what; oney, car, clothes, shoes, or a home. Tita also has positive traditions that aid her in her sturggle. Tita has special talents, both in the kitchen and beyond. She is great at cooking. She uses cooking for her personal purpose as well and that is to communicate. Tita prepares certain dishes for special occasions and at different times of the year. For example, the meal that Tita prepares with the rose petals. She prepares this meal with passion and love. Another time she had received roses from Pedro and with the pedals she prepared a dish of Quail and Rose Pedals. The dish had an extraordinary effect on the family. Upon eating the meal, the family was overcome with emotions of love. With this newfound love language Tita and Pedro were able to communicate their forbidden love. Tita gets her great cooking skills from Nacha. This is their way of passing down the recipes from generation to generation. Nacha was much more of a mother than Mama Elena could ever be to Tita. Through all the years that they have spent in the kitchen, Tita was building a strong relationship with the food she prepared. This was more of an experience than anything else was for her. Tita has also mastered another womenââ¬â¢s art, and that is knitting ; sowing, the blankets she wants to finish the day she marries Pedro. The knitted blanket represents Titaââ¬â¢s sorrows. Every night that Tita is sad, she knits. The blanket is about 20 feet long, an indication of how often she has been sad. One of the quotes that I enjoyed in the novel was ââ¬Å"While phosphorus (a match) doesnââ¬â¢t combine with oxygen to burn at ordinary temperatures, it does burst into flame very rapidly at an elevated temperature. In this quote I think that the author is trying to point out that to create this brilliant explosion, three ingredients are needed: phosphorus (off the tip of a match), oxygen, and a source of heat to melt the phosphorus, like the flame from a candle. Another quote that I enjoyed as well was ââ¬Å"With that meal it seemed they had discovered a new system of communication, in which Tita was the transmitter, Pedro the receiver, and poor Gertrudis the medium, the conducting body through which the singular sexual message was passed. â⬠I believe at this time once they tried Titaââ¬â¢s cooking they all had strong emotions for love.Titaââ¬â¢s cooking helped Tita and Pedro have even stronger feelings for each other while Gertrudis was completely desperate for love, which caused her later in the novel to run away, while she felt her body burning from heat. Like Water for Chocolate became one of my favorite books since the first time I read it. The magic of the story transformed the way I saw cooking, especially Mexican cuisine. I could smell, and almost taste, every dish prepared in De La Garza family kitchen. The story is one of the few that has been able to fill all my senses with every chapter. It seems to me that the central message, of this story is personal freedom. A simple doctrine that we each hold the keys to our own destiny, and for us to try to control the lives of others is an unnatural act, and morally wrong. Esquivelââ¬â¢s novel is very different from most books. Her novel uses recipes into the book in order to tell a story. It seems tradition in this novel plays a very strict role. There are advantages and disadvantages, but for most part Tita seems to be in extreme pain physically, after being hit by her mom several times by disobeying her and emotionally, by not being able to love.

The fact that his father had set up another place to live and show his pattern of crimes. A critical investigation of the effects of using different learning styles in swimming in KS1 - Essay Example The activity of swimming is a preventative learning experience that not only teaches a sport to children, but prepares them for the dangers of water Even though it may seem that water is a benign space, the truth is that it accounts for a significant number of deaths per year. Cultural disparities in infrastructure has caused some groups to have less access to swimming, thus putting them at higher risk for incidents. Swimming is also a social space, a place in which a natural hierarchy is developed and in which an unspoken set of rules govern behavior. Therefore, in creating curriculum that includes swimming, a social, safety, and culturally relevant system of skills is given to those participating in the educational venue. The ASA School Swimming Strategy Because of the many reasons for the advantages of having a swimming educational curriculum, it is crucial to critically evaluate the nature of swimming instruction as supported by the state. The ASA has identified four key elements that should be addressed where swimming is concerned: To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn to swim To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy swimming or water based fitness activities for health and fun throughout their lives To ensure everyone achieves their different personal goals throughout their lifetime To ensure we achieve gold medal success on the world stage (ASA) The problem with these objectives is that they skip the most crucial objective, which is to provide instruction that asserts the safety issues that must be addressed where water is concerned. ... This is an odd construction of focal points for a strategy that intends to cover the needs of all the participants in the program. While the strategy lists this a secondary focus, that it is listed without the focus of safety included is a quandary. The WHO (World Health Organization) has determined that 400,000 to 700,000 people drown each year at a worldwide level. There are a great deal of issues that affect the nature of drowning potential, including race, age, sex and the participation in instructions on water safety and swimming. Because many areas do not have sufficient infrastructure to support swimming as an activity, drowning becomes a real threat (Hastings, Zaharon, and Cable 915). The strategy outlines ways in which it helps schools systems to meet the criteria that are listed in different programmes. One of the programmes is the ââ¬Å"Every Child Mattersâ⬠programme that supports the idea that schools should be a place in which life long skill sets and protections are created so that the child has the best possible chance at a good outcome as an adult. Swimming, according to the ASA helps to provide this programme with some of its goals through achieving systems that create activities for extended school programmes so that there are places for children to go outside of the regular school time period (ASA). Again, this does not address the nature of the contribution of water safety that will provide further protections and skill sets that can save lives. Diamond compared and contrasted the availability of plants and animals that can be domesticated in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Papua New Guinea. He learned that countries with highly advanced societies ha d more domesticated animals and plants. Of the fourteen animal species that can be domesticated, 12 are native to Eurasia (Diamond, 2005, episode 1). South America domesticated the llama, while the farmers of New Guinea domesticated the pig. But pigs cannot plow farm lands, and by the time the Europeans arrived at Papua New Guinea at the 20th century, New Guinean farming depended on their hands (Diamond, 2005, 1). As for the distribution of domesticated plant species in the world, many of them are native to Europe and Asia, such as wheat, barley and rice. Only two plant species are native to Tropical Africa (sorghum and yams), only one is native to the Americas (corn), and one in Papua New Guinea (taro). The distribution of natural resources proves that geography consequently affected the interests and activities of the people. Human-made problems contributed to the collapse of civilizations. But in my own opinion having courage takes a lot of self confidence and audaciousness to be able to face one thing or do something that is very challenging and difficult. A lot of people define courage in lots of various ways. For other people such as soldiers, it may mean like fighting on a battle and facing all their enemies without any feeling of fear or hesitation to be able to serve their country and other people; willing to sacrifice their lives for the good of mankind and benefit of their country. In many circumstances, each and every individual in the world has courage. Different types of courage can be seen in their actions, words, works and other aspects of every humanââ¬â¢s life. There are different kinds of courage and it depends on how an individual wants to illustrate it. There are physical types of courage and moral ones. Physical courage could pertain to facing or dealing with something that has something to do with being valiant and not feeling afraid of getting physically hurt and willing to face any kind of danger that can cause an individual to suffer physically or even face death. On the other hand moral courage is related to becoming brave and the act of doing something that is deemed to be right. It shows the readiness of an individual to demonstrate the right act despite of different consequences such as being put into shame or scandal. Two different kind of courageousness yet they both share only one thought and meaning, which is being fearless and ready to face anything whatever consequence it may lead one person (Welsh). People manifest the act of courage everyday as they live their life. From infants to adults, courage is always present and can be observed to each and every individual on earth. For instance, a one year old child should have courage to be able to learn to walk, children needs courage to go to their first day of school and meet new people, teachers, classmates and friends, even an adult should have courage to apply for a job and start working on a company. Another example is a man who loves a woman should have courage to tell her what he feels to achieve what he wants and he should also be ready for whatever consequence it may lead him, like knowing that the girl loves him too or it could be the other way around. Courageousness is the one who pushes somebody to do something no matter what outcome may be. Furthermore, sick people such as those who have serious illness who wants to live longer should have a lot of courage to fight for their lives and survive to be able to live longer. Politicians and religious leaders are also a good example of people who demonstrates courage. As for politicians, they have the courage to lead people and do their best to make things in order while religious leaders teaches people lessons in life and encourage people to do good and to be closer to God. They serve people and they are brave enough to do their tasks no matter what consequence they may get and experience out of their courageous act such as false accusations, mockery and scandals. Simple things in life require courage in order for somebody to do and face it. The true meaning of courage can be seen in every individualââ¬â¢s heart. Being brave is to stand up for what one person believes and act on it. It is something that can be seen in every human being. Courage may sound a very simple word but it has a great meaning and value to every person in the world. Without courage the world would be chaotic and the world will not be a better world.
