The book focuses strictly on tradition and the three De La Garza sisters who possess different personalities. Tita, the main character in Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate has gone through much pain and suffering in her life.Mama Elena, Tita’s mother, has been cruel and ruthless with Tita, causing her great emotional distress. Tradition is an important part of life during Titas time. In fact, it is tradition that keeps Tita and Pedro apart, even though Tita and Pedro are fiercely in love. The only way she can express herself is through her cooking. Tita is the victim of her Mexican tradition and because of that she is forbidden to marry or have children until after her mothers death. Tita was always agreeable to this situation until she fell in love with young Pedro. Tita has many negative traditions that she has to struggle against.By family tradition, Tita, as the youngest daughter, is fated to care for her mother till her mothers death. She cannot marry, cannot have children, and yet she falls in love with Pedro. She is the youngest daughter and she has the most responsibilty of the three sisters. She is not allowed to make her own decisions, therefore her mom makes every decision for her. The last and most harshest thing she has to struggle against is not being able to choose whom to marry. That can put a person down, and make them feel as if they have hit rock bottom. Love is the only thing that makes people happy, no matter what; oney, car, clothes, shoes, or a home. Tita also has positive traditions that aid her in her sturggle. Tita has special talents, both in the kitchen and beyond. She is great at cooking. She uses cooking for her personal purpose as well and that is to communicate. Tita prepares certain dishes for special occasions and at different times of the year. For example, the meal that Tita prepares with the rose petals. She prepares this meal with passion and love. Another time she had received roses from Pedro and with the pedals she prepared a dish of Quail and Rose Pedals. The dish had an extraordinary effect on the family. Upon eating the meal, the family was overcome with emotions of love. With this newfound love language Tita and Pedro were able to communicate their forbidden love. Tita gets her great cooking skills from Nacha. This is their way of passing down the recipes from generation to generation. Nacha was much more of a mother than Mama Elena could ever be to Tita. Through all the years that they have spent in the kitchen, Tita was building a strong relationship with the food she prepared. This was more of an experience than anything else was for her. Tita has also mastered another women’s art, and that is knitting ; sowing, the blankets she wants to finish the day she marries Pedro. The knitted blanket represents Tita’s sorrows. Every night that Tita is sad, she knits. The blanket is about 20 feet long, an indication of how often she has been sad. One of the quotes that I enjoyed in the novel was â€Å"While phosphorus (a match) doesn’t combine with oxygen to burn at ordinary temperatures, it does burst into flame very rapidly at an elevated temperature. In this quote I think that the author is trying to point out that to create this brilliant explosion, three ingredients are needed: phosphorus (off the tip of a match), oxygen, and a source of heat to melt the phosphorus, like the flame from a candle. Another quote that I enjoyed as well was â€Å"With that meal it seemed they had discovered a new system of communication, in which Tita was the transmitter, Pedro the receiver, and poor Gertrudis the medium, the conducting body through which the singular sexual message was passed. † I believe at this time once they tried Tita’s cooking they all had strong emotions for love.Tita’s cooking helped Tita and Pedro have even stronger feelings for each other while Gertrudis was completely desperate for love, which caused her later in the novel to run away, while she felt her body burning from heat. Like Water for Chocolate became one of my favorite books since the first time I read it. The magic of the story transformed the way I saw cooking, especially Mexican cuisine. I could smell, and almost taste, every dish prepared in De La Garza family kitchen. The story is one of the few that has been able to fill all my senses with every chapter. It seems to me that the central message, of this story is personal freedom. A simple doctrine that we each hold the keys to our own destiny, and for us to try to control the lives of others is an unnatural act, and morally wrong. Esquivel’s novel is very different from most books. Her novel uses recipes into the book in order to tell a story. It seems tradition in this novel plays a very strict role. There are advantages and disadvantages, but for most part Tita seems to be in extreme pain physically, after being hit by her mom several times by disobeying her and emotionally, by not being able to love.

The ASA has identified four key elements that should be addressed where swimming is concerned: To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to learn to swim To ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy swimming or water based fitness activities for health and fun throughout their lives To ensure everyone achieves their different personal goals throughout their lifetime To ensure we achieve gold medal success on the world stage (ASA) The problem with these objectives is that they skip the most crucial objective, which is to provide instruction that asserts the safety issues that must be addressed where water is concerned. ... This is an odd construction of focal points for a strategy that intends to cover the needs of all the participants in the program. While the strategy lists this a secondary focus, that it is listed without the focus of safety included is a quandary. The WHO (World Health Organization) has determined that 400,000 to 700,000 people drown each year at a worldwide level. There are a great deal of issues that affect the nature of drowning potential, including race, age, sex and the participation in instructions on water safety and swimming. Because many areas do not have sufficient infrastructure to support swimming as an activity, drowning becomes a real threat (Hastings, Zaharon, and Cable 915). The strategy outlines ways in which it helps schools systems to meet the criteria that are listed in different programmes. One of the programmes is the â€Å"Every Child Matters† programme that supports the idea that schools should be a place in which life long skill sets and protections are created so that the child has the best possible chance at a good outcome as an adult. Swimming, according to the ASA helps to provide this programme with some of its goals through achieving systems that create activities for extended school programmes so that there are places for children to go outside of the regular school time period (ASA). Diamond compared and contrasted the availability of plants and animals that can be domesticated in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Papua New Guinea. Of the fourteen animal species that can be domesticated, 12 are native to Eurasia (Diamond, 2005, episode 1). South America domesticated the llama, while the farmers of New Guinea domesticated the pig. But pigs cannot plow farm lands, and by the time the Europeans arrived at Papua New Guinea at the 20th century, New Guinean farming depended on their hands (Diamond, 2005, 1). As for the distribution of domesticated plant species in the world, many of them are native to Europe and Asia, such as wheat, barley and rice. Only two plant species are native to Tropical Africa (sorghum and yams), only one is native to the Americas (corn), and one in Papua New Guinea (taro). Australian natives had no domesticable plant available to them (Diamond, 2005, 1). The distribution of natural resources proves that geography consequently affected the interests and activities of the people. Human-made problems contributed to the collapse of civilizations. Financial mismanagement disabled the state from supporting public goods and services. In addition, political division produced factions among Mongols. In Episode 2 of Guns, Germs, and Steel, Diamond (2005) explained the geographical advantages of the Europeans. Geography helped the communication of ideas and technologies too. Gunpowder travelled thousands of miles, where it originated from China and exported to Spain (Diamond, 2005, 2). But in my own opinion having courage takes a lot of self confidence and audaciousness to be able to face one thing or do something that is very challenging and difficult. A lot of people define courage in lots of various ways. For other people such as soldiers, it may mean like fighting on a battle and facing all their enemies without any feeling of fear or hesitation to be able to serve their country and other people; willing to sacrifice their lives for the good of mankind and benefit of their country. In many circumstances, each and every individual in the world has courage. Different types of courage can be seen in their actions, words, works and other aspects of every human’s life. There are different kinds of courage and it depends on how an individual wants to illustrate it. There are physical types of courage and moral ones. Physical courage could pertain to facing or dealing with something that has something to do with being valiant and not feeling afraid of getting physically hurt and willing to face any kind of danger that can cause an individual to suffer physically or even face death. On the other hand moral courage is related to becoming brave and the act of doing something that is deemed to be right. It shows the readiness of an individual to demonstrate the right act despite of different consequences such as being put into shame or scandal. Two different kind of courageousness yet they both share only one thought and meaning, which is being fearless and ready to face anything whatever consequence it may lead one person (Welsh). People manifest the act of courage everyday as they live their life. From infants to adults, courage is always present and can be observed to each and every individual on earth. For instance, a one year old child should have courage to be able to learn to walk, children needs courage to go to their first day of school and meet new people, teachers, classmates and friends, even an adult should have courage to apply for a job and start working on a company. Another example is a man who loves a woman should have courage to tell her what he feels to achieve what he wants and he should also be ready for whatever consequence it may lead him, like knowing that the girl loves him too or it could be the other way around. Courageousness is the one who pushes somebody to do something no matter what outcome may be. Furthermore, sick people such as those who have serious illness who wants to live longer should have a lot of courage to fight for their lives and survive to be able to live longer. Politicians and religious leaders are also a good example of people who demonstrates courage. As for politicians, they have the courage to lead people and do their best to make things in order while religious leaders teaches people lessons in life and encourage people to do good and to be closer to God. They serve people and they are brave enough to do their tasks no matter what consequence they may get and experience out of their courageous act such as false accusations, mockery and scandals. Simple things in life require courage in order for somebody to do and face it. The true meaning of courage can be seen in every individual’s heart. Being brave is to stand up for what one person believes and act on it. It is something that can be seen in every human being. I. Introduction Over the last few decades, the world has witnessed a global revolution, unleashed by technological innovations and catalyzed by market forces. Yet even as technology has made the world more efficient, it has also made the world vulnerable to threats posed by malicious actors. These actors have perpetrated innumerable crimes and the government struggles to combat these modern criminals. One threat stands out as particularly frightening: identity theft. The ability of a criminal to completely co-opt the identity of another person strikes at the very core of individuality. No longer can the victim be assured that his place in the world is singular and unique, dependent on his actions alone; rather, he is subject to sudden and dramatic changes, all at the behest of an actor who he – in all likelihood – does not even know. Noting the progressing trends of identify theft crimes in the last few years, Congress has begun to combat ID theft, hoping to drive it to extincti on. Yet the progress so far is discouraging. Modern statutes suffer the weakness of inadequacy, often relying upon traditional methods to engage a new and fundamentally different form of crime. The same problem afflicts most of the legislative proposals currently under Congressional consideration. And to make matters even worse, the few proposed bills that might be effective face a likely death at the hands of a Republican dominated Congress. Ultimately, Congress lacks the innovation and understanding to combat identity theft, leading to incoherent policies that do little to curb this new epidemic. II. The cell phone as we know was invented in the 1990s, and this invent has been one of the best inventions in the history. The use of the cell phones became popular and people began to utilize them in their daily lives. Nowadays to have a cell phone is not a luxury, is a necessity. According to the statistics, nine of ten persons in the United States have a cell phone. The cell phones have made positive and negative changes in our culture depending on the way people use them. Some of the positive effects of cell phones are easy communication and multitasking. The main usage of the cell phone was to be able to communicate easily. Originally, the cell phone was made only to talk when people were away from home or their office. After the years, they have been creating new technology that allow people to talk, text, email, browse the internet and make a videoconference sometimes at the same time, so we can say that the cell phone created better communication in the advantage world. In addi tion to easy communication, the cell phones are multitask. They have added many more options to make our lives easier. Now people don’t have to carry a map, gps, laptop, video camera, radio or a notebook. Also, people can play video games or watch a movie with only one small device. The cell phones have many positive effects; however, they also have negative effects like the high cost, negative social effects and dependency or addiction. The first negative effect is the cost. The newest Smartphones are expensive and their lifetime is short. They are always coming up with new upgrade technology that make people feel they need to buy the newest model. Also, the cost of the service is expensive; users need to pay depending in how many minutes they need or the Internet velocity. In addition users will pay for extra programs, applications and accessories not including in the monthly pay. Another negative effect is cell phones can create addiction or dependency. The cell phone can make people an addict because they feel that they need to have it with they all the time and also cause  anxiety for example, when you think you lost your phone you could feel stressed out about losing information saved on it. Moreover, it distracts your driving and it can cause an accident. Finally, there are the negative social effects. Since the Smartphone was created, people don’t communicate face to face as much as before. People is olate themselves because they prefer to talk by phone rather than verbally. Also, they have become very disrespectful because they use the phone in meetings, at church, in class, eating with friends etc. In conclusion, the cell phones make our life easy by facilitating communication. We also know that they have positive and negative effects, but the positive effects like easy communication, multitasking are stronger than the negative ones like cost, dependency and negative social effects. You can avoid the negative effects by using the phone with responsibility.

Discuss the range of devices Charles dickens uses to engage the interest of the reader in the opening chapters of Great Expectations It’s essential for a novel’s opening to engage the reader’s interest, if the opening isn’t fun or exciting they won’t bother reading on. At first ‘Great Expectations’ was published in magazines and in sets of two to three chapters, he mostly ended each in ‘series’ because of this with a cliff hanger, so that the readers would be eager to find out ‘what happened next’? As chapter 2 opened we saw an interesting contrast, as Pip runs in to his home we expect it to be a safety place, we were wrong, instead it is much more dangerous than the wilderness and the marshes because the ‘tickler’ (a wax-ended piece of cane, worn smooth by collision) was being applied to him by his sister. His sister, â€Å"applied Tickler to its further investigation† and then, â€Å"she concluded by throwing me†. The modern readers would find this very disturbing but in Dickens’ time hitting children was expected to put them ‘right’, they used the proverb in the Bible, â€Å"Spare the rod and spoil the child† and this was something Victorian parents believed in and used to discipline there children.
